Ok I Am Confused About Sunscreen!

We have been told for years to cover up and put sunscreen on to protect the skin from harmful rays. Now there have been reports in the media that sunscreen may be harmful. Here is an exerpt from Huffinton Post:

New FDA research data reveal that a type of Vitamin A (found on the label as “retinyl palmitate” or “retinol”), which is in 41% of sunscreens, may actually increase the growth of cancerous skin tumors and lesions. While vitamin A is used in many skin products for its antioxidant properties to slow skin aging, when in the sun it may have photocarcinogenic properties that can damage the skin more than protect it. The FDA’s one year study found that lab animals coated in a cream with Vitamin A and exposed to sunlight daily developed skin tumors and lesions 21% sooner than the control animals with no vitamin A. While the data are only preliminary, the FDA’s full assessment will be issued in October.

The Environmental Working Group just released their fourth annual Sunscreen Guide, with recommendations for only 39 of the 500 sunscreen products reviewed. The EWG found many products misleading in their claims, lacking in adequate protection from all types of ultraviolet radiation, and containing many potentially hazardous chemicals. Because the FDA still has not issued any sunscreen industry regulations, which they began drafting 32 years ago, consumers are left to discover the safest products on their own.

EWG Senior Vice President For Research Jane Houlihan said, “Many sunscreens available in the U.S. may be the equivalent of modern-day snake oil, plying customers with claims of broad-spectrum protection but not providing it, while exposing people to potentially hazardous chemicals that can penetrate the skin into the body.”

Here are some of the dangerous truths about sunscreen, including the best and worst products.

A Few Organization Tips From Junk It!

Something a lot of us struggle with is organization.  We all have busy lives and, when you come home from a long day at work, it’s very easy to just “let things lie where they may” and worry about clean up tomorrow.  The problem is that, eventually, this disorganization becomes overwhelming.  How many times have you spent several minutes riffling through a stack of paper on your desk in an attempt to find something specific?  The longer it takes you to find something, the more frustrated you get and the more frustrated you get, the less likely you are to find what you’re looking for.

Here are a few organizing tips that should help you avoid those situations:

-       Designate a place for everything

-       Those papers on your desk belong in a filing cabinet.  Those magazines spread across the coffee table would be better off in a basket.  Your kitchen tools and appliances should go back into the same drawer or cabinet after each use.  Having a designated spot for everything is a great way to stay organized.

-       Clean as you go

-       Rather than spending one day a week or one weekend a month cleaning your entire house, simply place everything back where it belongs as soon as you’re done with it.  It’s easy to leave your coat on a chair and your mail in a pile on the couch, but eventually just placing stuff around the house leads to disorganization, clutter and stress.  If you put things where they belong right away, you won’t have to spend hours cleaning later on.

-       Get drawers and shelving

-       It’s a lot easier to be organized when you have the right tools.  Get a filing cabinet for your office and a book shelf for your living room.  Invest in a closet organizer.  When you have more places to put things you’re more likely to put them away.

-       Get rid of what you don’t need

-       Everyone has clutter, but there’s a difference between clutter and junk.  Things that you haven’t used in a very long while and will likely never use again are junk.  Unless they are precious heirlooms or treasured mementos, you should get rid of what you don’t use.  The same goes for furniture and appliances.  Many people have entire basements or garages filled with large items they never touch.  Some of those items are even damaged or broken! Get rid of them!

Junk It! can dispose of the items you don’t need.  Our professional junk removal team works throughout southern Ontario and we can help you get your life back in order!  Contact us today!

Deciding What To Throw Away

One of the toughest parts of cleaning and decluttering your home is deciding what to get rid of.  Many people hesitate to throw items away.  Maybe they have an emotional attachment to them, maybe they feel that they could come in handy some day and maybe they just don’t like getting rid of things they own.  Whatever the reason, it’s usually difficult for most people to throw out a large number of items.

Sometimes it’s an issue with letting go.  You remember when you bought that couch 20 years ago and even though you sink to the floor when you sit down these days, you can’t bear to throw it away.  Other times you feel like a failure for getting rid of something you honestly intended to use.  We see this a lot with exercise equipment.  You bought that ab machine six years ago and used it twice, but you’d feel like a quitter if you gave it away.

There are a few ways to decide what to throw away.  One good method is to make quick, immediate decisions on things.  Go through your clutter and quickly sort things into three piles.  Make a “keep” pile, a “throw away” pile and a “maybe” pile.  Don’t take a long time to make these decisions.  Just quickly place things in piles based on your first instinct.  When you’re done, split the “maybe” pile into the “keep” and “throw away” piles.  Don’t second guess your decisions and don’t be irrational.

You have to be honest with yourself and truly put effort into your clean up.  If you haven’t used something in over a year, honestly think about why you’re keeping it.  Some items are mementos and you may want to keep those items, but a lot of the things you are saving are probably useless to you now.

Just because you once spent money on an item or just because something once worked is not a good reason to keep it.  If items are broken or missing pieces, think about whether or not you can fix them.  Then think about whether or not you actually WILL fix them.  If the answer to either of those questions is “no” it’s time to say goodbye.

And if you’re worried about creating more garbage and filling up landfills, you can relax.  Junk It recycles as much as we possibly can.  On average, up to 60% of the items we pick up for disposal are recycled.  Some items are even donated to charitable organizations.

When it comes to cleaning and organizing, deciding what to throw away can be the most difficult part of the process.  But with a little willpower and honesty you can cut down on your clutter and open up your home to all kinds of new opportunities.

A Few Charities Junk It Donates Goods To

Junk It and Charity

Junk It always strives to reuse and recycle as much of our clients’ junk as possible.  We take pride in the fact that we are able to recycle 60% of the material we pick up on average.  But we don’t just take the appliances, carpeting, electronics and furniture we pick up to recycling centres.  We always take whatever we can to not-for-profit organizations as well.

They say that “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” and this statement is often true.  Sometimes people throw away perfectly good items that can easily be reused.  A family that gets a new couch may decide to part with the old one.  A white dishwasher may not match with the new silver appliances in the kitchen, so it’s given to us.  Some families end up moving across the country and they have us pick up almost everything they own!  In these cases, and many other cases, we donate whatever we can to charity.

Here is a bit of detail on a few of the organizations we donate goods to:

Goodwill

Goodwill provides employment placement services, job training programs and other community-based programs for people that require them.  Clothing and other household goods donated to Goodwill are sold in retail stores across North America.  Goodwill generally accepts clothing and consumer electronic donations.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to building and selling affordable housing.  Volunteers build homes which are then sold at no profit.  They accept donations of building materials as well as other items that can be sold in their ReStore locations.

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is an international movement to help the poor and hungry, regardless of age, gender, colour or creed.  They operate a network of thrift stores that resell donated clothing, housewares, toys and other items.

Junk It donates to these charities and several others, depending on each individual situation and the type of goods we receive.  If you are looking at junk removal, furniture removal, appliance removal or carpet removal, you can rest assured that Junk It will make all efforts to ensure your unwanted goods are given to those who need them.  When you’re cleaning out your home, you don’t need to worry about sorting materials and donating them separately.  Junk It can handle the donation and the disposal all at once.

Moving MonkeyMoving is difficult at any time of the year, but moving during the winter is even worse.  It’s cold and snowy and the roads are icy and difficult to drive on.  It gets dark very early and the cold wind will make you want to stay inside under a blanket.

Here are a few tips that will help you move in the cold:

Dress warmly

◦       You’ll likely be spending a lot of your time carrying items from the house to the car and you will probably leave the doors to your house open in order to make moving easier.  If you don’t dress warmly you will have a miserable time.

Cover carpets and flooring to avoid tracking dirty snow and water inside

◦       When you’re bringing items from your house to your car or from your car to your house, you likely won’t be stopping to take off and put on your shoes each time.  Protect your home by covering the floors.

Be careful with anything the can freeze

◦       This includes plants and any liquids you may be moving.  Don’t leave these items in the cold very long as you could seriously damage them.

Junk It can definitely help you with your winter move.  Rather than taking another cold trip outside and lugging your belongings to the dump, let Junk It do it for you!  We have a team of experience junk removal staff ready to empty your home of junk!

It doesn’t matter how cold it is, just give Junk It a call and we’ll arrange to be at your home to throw away your garbage.  Our full service junk removal option is affordable, reliable and easy.  You don’t have to do anything but contact us!  We’ll take care of the rest.  Junk It recycles 60% of the materials we pick up, so you don’t have to worry about your goods taking up space in a landfill.

When you’re moving in the winter you want to spend as little time outside as you can.  Let Junk It help!  Contact us today.
