Junk Removal: Not Just for Hoarders or Construction Companies

We have received a few calls this week from people concerned that they may not have enough junk for it to be worth their while and that they might just wait until they accumulate a huge pile of garbage before they request a bin service. But, you don’t have to wait that long!

Using a junk removal service does not necessarily mean that you have to hoard your junk before you call us. If you want to get rid of a couple things to make your life clutter free, we can do that for you! Our full service is perfect for single item junk removal or if you have small amounts of garbage you wish to get rid of. If you want to go for a bin rental, we have four different bin sizes that you can choose from; 5, 10, 15 and 20 cubic yards. The sizes of the bins are all the same length and width with the only varying factor being the height. Respectively our bin heights range from 1.5 ft, 3 ft, 4 ft, and 5 ft high. We can either drop a bin off so you can fill it yourself (self service) or we can come to your location and do it for you (full service)! Whichever service you choose to use, we will make sure it is hassle free! Call us now at 416.531.5865 or book online at www.junkit.ca.

Explosive Demolition – The Best of 2002

It’s getting colder outside and I’m losing my will to dress up warm like a Michelin man so instead I laze around on my couch on the weekends and flick through YouTube videos. So it was really only a matter of time before I discovered an amazing demolition video that shows the best building implosions of 2002. It’s incredible how they place the explosives at the right points in order for the building to collapse in on itself without wrecking anything next to it. Most of the buildings are in populated areas and it’s mind blowing (no pun intended) to witness such perfection. Has anyone witnessed a demolition? How do they perform the clean up? I’m thinking it would probably take about 100 JuNK iT trucks to even make a dent! I hope you enjoy the video.

Last week we discussed how great our customer service is (even check us out on homestars) and what to expect with a full service. With it being a huge hit we’ve been specifically asked to write a bit about our self service bin rentals and what it entails.

You might wish to take some time to dispose of your junk and if that’s the case then self service is the perfect option for you. The costs involved with self service vary but at the end of the day you will be charged to separate items; a bin rental fee and a weight disposal charge.

The first step is for you to pick the size of the bin you wish to rent. We have 5, 10, 15 and 20 yard bins. Each bin is 8’ by 14’ and the only variation is the height of the sides which range from 1.5’, 3’, 4’ and 5’ respectively. If you aren’t sure which size is best for you, just contact us. Our representative will be more than happy to help you out.

Once you’ve chosen the bin that best suits your needs, your postal code is used to determine an accurate quote by both our website and our representative (if you are calling).

We then deliver the bin on the day you requested, laying down a temporary wood platform on your driveway for protection. You can also order a tarp to cover the bin to account for any weather that may affect the weight of your bin at a low cost of $29.99 which you get to keep at the end of the project. Once set up, you can load up your junk by simply walking right in. No need to strain to dump stuff over the high walls. Make sure to keep the junk at the same level as the side of the bins so we can cover it and transport it safely once you are done. Please be advised that no toxic, corrosive, flammable or poisonous materials are allowed in the bin. This includes paint cans, car batteries, gas etc. If you are unsure, give us a call.

Take your time and we will pick it up whenever you are ready. Need extra days? Give us a call and we can extend your rental as needed. Need an early pick up? Not a problem, we can do that too.

When the bin is ready to be picked up, our crew will arrive on the scene. You don’t even need to be home. They will go get your junk weighed down to the second decimal and get it disposed of. A weight ticket is issued which is then charged to you at a cost of $99 per metric tonne. On both the bin rental and weight charges, a sales ticket is emailed to you. If you wish, we can also scan the weight ticket and email you that as well.

And don’t forget if you book online with any of our services you get an additional $25 off!

13 Tips for De-cluttering

For some, getting rid of clutter is easy, other’s not so much! I love watching my parents de-clutter the house. I make sure I grab some popcorn because I know it will be an entertaining day!

I see my Dad tear around the house, rounding up all the extra bits in our house and throwing it out, organizing everything in boxes while my mom is his shadow, putting everything back where it was, rummaging through the boxes and the garbage making sure he didn’t throw out anything she “loved”. Problem is, she loves everything! So here is a simple list for those who find it hard to part with their 5th grade t-shirt!

  1. Take it slow. De-clutter for 15 minutes every day. You will be amazed at how much you will eventually get through.
  2. Don’t allow more things into your house. Whether you are de-cluttering or not, bringing in more stuff will just make it worse.
  3. Gift everything. Feeling bad about wasting or throwing out things may make you feel bad, but donating it or gifting it will make you feel better.
  4. Reward yourself! A few checks on a calendar to show which days you de-clutter sounds silly but is rewarding by giving you a sense of accomplishment.
  5. Start at the corner and do the superficial stuff first and then make your way in deeper.
  6. Whenever you are boiling the kettle for tea or coffee, tidy up the kitchen.
  7. “One in, two out” rule. If you bring in a new item, you have to throw/give away two other items.
  8. Make your storage space smaller. The bigger the room, the more you can fit into it.
  9. Clothing rule: If you haven’t worn an item in 6 months, sell it or donate it.
  10. The one-year rule. Take items that make you say “I might need this one day” and put it into a box. Seal it and date it a year from that day. If that date comes and you STILL haven’t needed it, then donate the box WITHOUT OPENING IT! You probably won’t even remember what is in there.
  11. One room at a time. One clean room will motivate you to tackle others.
  12. Impulse buying. Make a list of all the items you are buying. This will give you time to reconsider the items. It you feel it’s an impulse buy, leave it behind and come back for it tomorrow IF you remember. Seeing the list of items you almost bought on impulse helps you realize the money you just saved as well as the mess you saved yourself from cleaning up.
  13. Have someone else go through things with you but make sure it’s someone you trust!

If you feel de-cluttering is too much trouble because it might involve hiring a junk removal company, don’t sweat it because JuNKiT! is here. We make it so easy for you. Order online or by phone, the bin gets dropped off and then picked up when you are done. It’s that easy!

One Man’s Junk is Another Man’s Treasure!

vintage oil cans

Junk It is a huge fan of American Pickers. It’s only natural, we both deal with junk! If you aren’t a fan of the show then you should be! We are all familiar with antique dealers who buy and sell antiques from a store but we aren’t too familiar with how the antiques get there in the first place! Thanks to Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz, antique pickers are now in the spotlight. Their episodes are laden with beautiful sceneries, laughter, frustration and amazing finds! You get to experience the thrill and adventure behind antique picking as they travel across states, meeting collectors, hoarders, amateur historians and down-right dirty and dangerous sheds, each with amazing stories to tell.  They race against time encountering left over from other pickers, scraping through jewels and junk in order to find “the one.” Each and every treasure they uncover is like a new history lesson, providing everyone a glimpse into the distant past of the American life.

It’s a risky business and sometimes the best pickers buy the biggest junk. But sometimes, another man’s junk is another man’s treasure. Not so long ago, Junk It found these amazing old oil cans in one of their bins! Strangely enough, Frank Fritz from American Pickers LOVES old oil cans. In a quick video about his love for oil cans, he says that some that are full and in good condition can go for thousands! Although the ones we found seem pretty beat and are long gone by now, it reminded us of Frank and how history can be found in the craziest places. Maybe next time we will call Frank and Mike to crawl around in our dumpsters! YIKES! I don’t think so!

Increase the Value of your Home with Junk Removal

Junk RemovalWhen you are selling you home you usually want to do whatever possible to get a higher sales price.  One of the best ways to do this is to clean up the house before you have any showings.  Houses that are clean and organized look better and are more attractive to buyers.  It helps to clean up and declutter your home before each showing.  But you can’t just shove all of junk into a closet or cabinet, potential buyers will want to look there!  The solution?  Junk removal.

Rooms look bigger when there is less furniture in them.  It’s easier to move around, the space feels more open and the room appears more bright.  Here furniture removal is the answer.  Think about what you’ll be taking with you to your new home.  If the plan is to dispose of some of the furniture before you move, why not get rid of it now?  A junk disposal company can take away your unwanted couches, tables, desks and chairs.  You’ll be left with a more spacious room.  This will allow potential buyers to see the home for what it really is and all them to start planning how they would arrange their own furniture in the house.

Many possible buyers want to be able to picture themselves living in the home.  A room filled with your personal belongings makes this more difficult to do.  Removing things like pictures and family heirlooms and putting them in storage is the first step here.  The second step is to get rid of the old clutter that is making your home look bad.  Once you’ve cleaned out your home it will be much easier for others to see themselves living there.

You may also want to get rid of any appliances or electronics that no longer work.  Sometimes spending a little bit of money on a new dishwasher and replacing the broken one can substantially increase the value of your home.  New buyers do not want to think about all of the work they’ll need to do on a property.  Eliminate their worry over replacing broken appliances and do it yourself.  It will definitely pay off in the long run.  An appliance disposal company can remove your unwanted items for you and make your home look almost new!

The same can be said for broken roof shingles and other damaged areas of the home.  You may want to consider fixing or replacing these things before selling.  You’ll also definitely want to clean out your cluttered basement or garage before selling!  A junk removal company can take all of this clutter away and make your home shine once again.

With just a little bit of effort it is possible to increase the value of your home by a great deal.  Junk removal Toronto is a great way to declutter your home and make it much more attractive to buyers.

Storage or Junk Removal?

Junk RemovalOne reason people have clutter is that they are storing items in their home.  They may even have a storage room.  The problem is that if you keep putting things into a storage room you eventually get to a point where you can’t fit anything else.  That’s when you need to start getting rid of items instead of storing them.

Of course, another option is to rent out a storage locker or storage facility and place all of the items that are cluttering up your home in that facility.  It sounds like a good answer.  You get the junk out of your house and you don’t have to throw it away.  It’s always there if you need it.  Ultimately, that’s the problem.  You don’t need it.  You likely never will.

Storage lockers are great short-term solutions.  If you’re moving or renovating it’s a good idea to place your items in a storage facility.  They also prove useful for people living in apartments or small homes.  For just about everyone else though, they’re really just an extension of your clutter.

The problem with storage facilities is that your junk is out of sight and out of mind.  Most people don’t use these places as temporary storage or for seasonal items.  Many people rent a storage locker, fill it with stuff and never think about it again.  The issue is that while you’re items are sitting in a locker somewhere, the bills are mounting up.  You’re now paying for your junk on a monthly basis.

Before you rent a storage locker, stop for a moment and figure out exactly what you’re going to store there.  Also think about whether or not you will ever need to access these items again.  If you really can’t see yourself heading back to the locker to get the materials out, you should really think about throwing them away.

When compared with the monthly costs associated with renting a storage locker, the price of junk removal is negligible.  And you won’t just be saving money.  You’ll have the piece of mind knowing that you’ve finally cleared out your clutter for good.  You won’t just be moving your junk around, you’ll be getting rid of it and starting fresh.  That’s a good feeling.

Junk Removal Toronto Services Make Moving Easier

Junk Removal TorontoMoving is difficult.  It’s a long process and it usually involves heavy lifting, not to mention organization and time management.  Yes, you can hire a moving company to physically transport your items for you, but you still have to organize them and pack them up.  Plus, the more you have, the more work you have to do.  This is especially true when you’ve lived in a home for a long time.

Junk removal Toronto can make the moving process much easier.  If you have less stuff in your house, you have less to pack, you have less to move and you have less to unpack later!  Plus, you’ll be moving into your new home without all of the clutter that plagued your last place.

And don’t worry, adding junk removal Toronto services to your moving plan won’t add stress during this very busy time.  You can choose to have a full service junk removal team come to your home, dispose of whatever you no longer need and take all of your junk away while you focus on more important matters.

Just think, all of that old furniture sitting in your basement could be gone.  So could the outdated or broken appliances that are cluttering up your cabinets, the piles of old and worn clothing in your closets and the stacks of papers and magazines that make your garage look terrible.  There’s no need to bring these items to your new home and there’s no time to stress about what to do with them.  Hire a junk removal company and say goodbye!

Junk It! offers full service junk removal that is efficient, affordable and easy.  Just tell us what to get rid of, and we’ll make sure it’s gone  You only pay for the time it takes to remove the items and the space they take up in our trucks.  There are no hidden fees and you never pay more than you have to.  And don’t worry about the environmental impact of a wholesale cleaning, Junk It works hard to recycle as much as we possibly can.  We typically recycle 60% of the items we’re hired to remove.

A Few Charities Junk It Donates Goods To

Junk It and Charity

Junk It always strives to reuse and recycle as much of our clients’ junk as possible.  We take pride in the fact that we are able to recycle 60% of the material we pick up on average.  But we don’t just take the appliances, carpeting, electronics and furniture we pick up to recycling centres.  We always take whatever we can to not-for-profit organizations as well.

They say that “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” and this statement is often true.  Sometimes people throw away perfectly good items that can easily be reused.  A family that gets a new couch may decide to part with the old one.  A white dishwasher may not match with the new silver appliances in the kitchen, so it’s given to us.  Some families end up moving across the country and they have us pick up almost everything they own!  In these cases, and many other cases, we donate whatever we can to charity.

Here is a bit of detail on a few of the organizations we donate goods to:

Goodwill

Goodwill provides employment placement services, job training programs and other community-based programs for people that require them.  Clothing and other household goods donated to Goodwill are sold in retail stores across North America.  Goodwill generally accepts clothing and consumer electronic donations.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to building and selling affordable housing.  Volunteers build homes which are then sold at no profit.  They accept donations of building materials as well as other items that can be sold in their ReStore locations.

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is an international movement to help the poor and hungry, regardless of age, gender, colour or creed.  They operate a network of thrift stores that resell donated clothing, housewares, toys and other items.

Junk It donates to these charities and several others, depending on each individual situation and the type of goods we receive.  If you are looking at junk removal, furniture removal, appliance removal or carpet removal, you can rest assured that Junk It will make all efforts to ensure your unwanted goods are given to those who need them.  When you’re cleaning out your home, you don’t need to worry about sorting materials and donating them separately.  Junk It can handle the donation and the disposal all at once.
