Christmas Organizing Ideas

I will admit that up until last weekend my Christmas tree still decorated my living room. I also found out that I wasn’t the only one reluctant to put it away. Sure it makes your living room look wonderful and festive. It has this warm glow that you wished you could have all year round. But although we love our Christmas decorations and the happiness they provide us, in reality we don’t want to take them down because it’s too much of a hassle. There isn’t enough space in the closet, garage or furnace room to shove all the decorations because they are already over-flowing with boxes. What to do?

First of all I found that getting rid of some of those old boxes is the best way to start. It’s not the most motivating idea I have ever had but getting rid of stuff you don’t use and making space for stuff that you do use is rewarding in itself. I was browsing styleathome.com one day and came across some wonderful ideas on how to organize your Christmas decorations and store them away properly. I cleared out the mess that was my closet, put up some shelving, bought some clear storage containers with dividers for every single ornament and got to work. The end result was fantastic. My closet was organized and because the containers were clear I knew what the contents of each one was. This even inspired me to make the rest of my house look the same way. So if you end up cleaning out your closets, furnace rooms or garage and find you need a junk removal company be sure to check out our prices at junkit.ca where we can help you make this process a hassle free one.

Self Service Questions Answered

Last week we discussed how great our customer service is (even check us out on homestars) and what to expect with a full service. With it being a huge hit we’ve been specifically asked to write a bit about our self service bin rentals and what it entails.

You might wish to take some time to dispose of your junk and if that’s the case then self service is the perfect option for you. The costs involved with self service vary but at the end of the day you will be charged to separate items; a bin rental fee and a weight disposal charge.

The first step is for you to pick the size of the bin you wish to rent. We have 5, 10, 15 and 20 yard bins. Each bin is 8’ by 14’ and the only variation is the height of the sides which range from 1.5’, 3’, 4’ and 5’ respectively. If you aren’t sure which size is best for you, just contact us. Our representative will be more than happy to help you out.

Once you’ve chosen the bin that best suits your needs, your postal code is used to determine an accurate quote by both our website and our representative (if you are calling).

We then deliver the bin on the day you requested, laying down a temporary wood platform on your driveway for protection. You can also order a tarp to cover the bin to account for any weather that may affect the weight of your bin at a low cost of $29.99 which you get to keep at the end of the project. Once set up, you can load up your junk by simply walking right in. No need to strain to dump stuff over the high walls. Make sure to keep the junk at the same level as the side of the bins so we can cover it and transport it safely once you are done. Please be advised that no toxic, corrosive, flammable or poisonous materials are allowed in the bin. This includes paint cans, car batteries, gas etc. If you are unsure, give us a call.

Take your time and we will pick it up whenever you are ready. Need extra days? Give us a call and we can extend your rental as needed. Need an early pick up? Not a problem, we can do that too.

When the bin is ready to be picked up, our crew will arrive on the scene. You don’t even need to be home. They will go get your junk weighed down to the second decimal and get it disposed of. A weight ticket is issued which is then charged to you at a cost of $99 per metric tonne. On both the bin rental and weight charges, a sales ticket is emailed to you. If you wish, we can also scan the weight ticket and email you that as well.

And don’t forget if you book online with any of our services you get an additional $25 off!

Make Cleaning Fun And Easy For Your Kids

Cleaning time can be painful for any parent. Battle cries of “Clean your room!” echo through the walls and seem to make no difference. But all hope is not lost. Here are three easy tips to help make cleaning fun and easy.

  1. Take the child’s view point: By getting down to their level you will realize what the world looks like from their point of view. Closet doors might be too complicated or heavy to open, hangers too high to reach, and containers may be in hard to reach places or are not easy to open. Make things easier for them by removing closet doors and replacing them with fashionable shower curtains, buy child size coat hangers, and have open floor-level containers for clothes and toys.
  2. Keep child a part of the process and make it fun: Yelling is not going to teach them organization skills or maintenance methods. In fact, it’s going to make them hate cleaning even more. Teaching and learning first hand, however, does. So don’t race around the room by yourself because you feel it will be faster and less complicated. You will only be doing yourself a disservice in the long run. Keep your child involved. Have them help. Play some music while you do it. Be their organizational consultant. And when they are done, give them a great big “High five!” afterwards followed with some great compliments. In no time, they will be more than happy to clean their room even if you have to encourage them a little.
  3. De-clutter their room: Children out grow their toys and clothes almost every year and almost every year we replace them with new and better ones. But as the years go on, we soon begin to accumulate a lot of out-grown and unnecessary junk. If you have plans to have more kids, then have your child help you box and store away toys and clothes for their next “brother” or “sister”.  If there are no plans for more children, get your child to donate salvageable items they don’t want anymore and dispose of the rest.

If you are moving or planning a big clean-up and need help with removing junk, be sure to book with JuNK iT! online today.

Reducing Your Waste

Environmental Protection Agency stated that the average household American produces about 4.4 pounds of garbage a day, or a total of 29 pounds per week and 1,600 pounds a year.  Apparently, although that’s a lot of garbage, Mexican’s produce 30% more garbage than Americans!

Recycling is a big part of reducing waste. Make sure when you are de-cluttering that you donate items that can be re-used. Make sure that you recycle your newspapers, aluminum containers and certain plastics. Another way to help with reducing waste is to buy less, buy things in smaller packages, and reuse what you have. This will drastically reduce the amount of garbage going into the landfills.

For the rest of your waste call JuNK It! and we will help you dispose of it properly and without any hassle. Call us today and book your bin.

13 Tips for De-cluttering

For some, getting rid of clutter is easy, other’s not so much! I love watching my parents de-clutter the house. I make sure I grab some popcorn because I know it will be an entertaining day!

I see my Dad tear around the house, rounding up all the extra bits in our house and throwing it out, organizing everything in boxes while my mom is his shadow, putting everything back where it was, rummaging through the boxes and the garbage making sure he didn’t throw out anything she “loved”. Problem is, she loves everything! So here is a simple list for those who find it hard to part with their 5th grade t-shirt!

  1. Take it slow. De-clutter for 15 minutes every day. You will be amazed at how much you will eventually get through.
  2. Don’t allow more things into your house. Whether you are de-cluttering or not, bringing in more stuff will just make it worse.
  3. Gift everything. Feeling bad about wasting or throwing out things may make you feel bad, but donating it or gifting it will make you feel better.
  4. Reward yourself! A few checks on a calendar to show which days you de-clutter sounds silly but is rewarding by giving you a sense of accomplishment.
  5. Start at the corner and do the superficial stuff first and then make your way in deeper.
  6. Whenever you are boiling the kettle for tea or coffee, tidy up the kitchen.
  7. “One in, two out” rule. If you bring in a new item, you have to throw/give away two other items.
  8. Make your storage space smaller. The bigger the room, the more you can fit into it.
  9. Clothing rule: If you haven’t worn an item in 6 months, sell it or donate it.
  10. The one-year rule. Take items that make you say “I might need this one day” and put it into a box. Seal it and date it a year from that day. If that date comes and you STILL haven’t needed it, then donate the box WITHOUT OPENING IT! You probably won’t even remember what is in there.
  11. One room at a time. One clean room will motivate you to tackle others.
  12. Impulse buying. Make a list of all the items you are buying. This will give you time to reconsider the items. It you feel it’s an impulse buy, leave it behind and come back for it tomorrow IF you remember. Seeing the list of items you almost bought on impulse helps you realize the money you just saved as well as the mess you saved yourself from cleaning up.
  13. Have someone else go through things with you but make sure it’s someone you trust!

If you feel de-cluttering is too much trouble because it might involve hiring a junk removal company, don’t sweat it because JuNKiT! is here. We make it so easy for you. Order online or by phone, the bin gets dropped off and then picked up when you are done. It’s that easy!

Fall Landscaping Tips

Winter.

There I said it.

It’s coming and as much as we all want to deny the fact that we will be freezing soon and experiencing some snow fall, it’s time to take care of our gardens before it’s too late.

That’s right. It’s mulching and pruning time. Add about a one to two inch layer of organic mulch, covering the roots of your plants. It helps retain moisture as well as regulates the temperature of the soil. As far as pruning goes, make sure to cut back the branches that appear dead and the ones that aren’t budding anymore. Make a small cut on the underneath of the branch to prevent breaking. Then cut the top half, making a clean cut which will help it heal evenly and promote growth. Make sure to wear protective goggles and gloves to be safe.

Cleaning up your garden can result in a lot of debris that needs to be removed. Sounds like a job for JuNK iT!
