Junk Raiders

Junk Raiders Cast

Junk Raiders is a reality television show that airs on the Discovery Channel in Canada and Ion Television in the United States.  The show features a team of seven people with one goal: renovate a downtown Toronto factory into a high-end loft.  The catch is that they only have one month and $5000 to do it!

It’s a process that is as difficult as it sounds.

When the Junk Raiders needed a disposal bin, they called Junk It.  In episode three of the series they cleaned out the factory, throwing out a large amount of construction material and waste.  Junk It was there to provide the dumpster.  Since the team had a very small budget and a tight time frame to complete their task, it was important to them that the junk disposal was fast, efficient and affordable.

Junk It was able to get on site quickly and the cost of the disposal bin left the team with most of their budget intact.

The team went on to completely renovate the space.  Many of the materials they used were recycled from those who no longer wanted them.

Some other interesting facts about the Junk Raiders TV show:

  • In order to prepare for the show and have enough free materials to complete the job, the team set up a junk hot line and requested donations from the people of Toronto
  • Going through people’s trash to salvage for items is illegal in Toronto.  The show received a special exemption to do so.
  • The team was made up of seven people.  Two were considered “freecyclers” and they focused on saving, recycling and salvaging materials whenever possible.  The other five members were termed “wasters.”  They consisted of the owner of an electronics store, an interior designer, a general contractor, a labourer and a builder.

The show is available to watch online on the Discovery Channels website:

Junk Removal Can Make You Love Your Home More

When you first moved into your current home, you probably loved it.  It was likely an empty space, filled with nothing but possibility and hope.  How come when you look at it now, you see nothing but wasted space and junk you no longer use?  That’s easy.  When you live in a place for a while, you accumulate clutter and clutter reduces the living space in your home.

Almost everyone has some furniture, appliances and knick knacks that do nothing but take up space in their home.  They haven’t used them in years and they make their home feel cluttered, unorganized and messy.  Removing these unwanted items can definitely make your home feel more spacious.

The first step is to determine what you no longer need.  If something is worn or damaged and cannot be repaired, it’s probably best to get rid of it.  The same can be said for items you haven’t touched in more than a year.  For some people tossing these items into the garbage can be a painful experience, but it is one that will make you feel much better about yourself and your home.  Would you rather have a pile of old clothes or room to relax in your new spacious den?

Furniture removal and appliance removal are two big steps that can help open up your home.  Maybe you’re keeping an old couch with a few holes in it in your basement.  Maybe you have a spare refrigerator in the garage that doesn’t work anymore.  These things are junk!  Get rid of them.

Junk removal services are the easiest way to dispose of unwanted items.  You can arrange for a garbage removal company to come to your home and help you with the clean up, or you can rent dumpsters or garbage bins and start filling them yourself.  Either way, garbage removal is a great process that will make you love your home once again.

Another great way to clean up your home is to remove the junk from your basement.  Many basements are filled with items that can only be classified as garbage.  You probably have boxes of old clothes that you can donate and several old newspapers, carpets and small appliances that you can throw away.  A good basement clean out can open up all kinds of new spaces within your home.  You can finally build the home bar, den or game room you’ve always wanted.

You may also want to look into carpet removal.  If you’ve lived in your home for a long time, your carpet may be worn, faded and dirty.  Replacing the carpet or installing new floors instead will make your living space feel brand new.

There’s just something satisfying about watching your home reveal its true self while dumpsters and garbage bins fill up.  You’ll wish you’d done it years ago!

Walk for Miracles

Junk It was there once again, supplying dumpsters to Walk for Miracles on June 12 in Toronto. Another very worthy cause that Junk it was proud to be a part of.

The Walmart Walk For Miracles is an annual event which helps Children’s Miracle Network raise funds for 12 children’s hospital foundations across Canada. All dollars raised, fund life-saving care, ground breaking research and special programs designed to offer the highest quality care to sick and injured children. Children’s Miracle Network has raised more than $3 billion for children’s hospitals since its inception in 1983. Last year alone, Children’s Miracle Network member hospitals in Canada helped over 2.6 million children.

Each year you can join your friends and neighbours for a family-friendly 1 km or 5 km walk at one of twelve walk sites across Canada – or at your own Virtual Miracle Walk site – and help raise funds for Canada’s children’s hospitals.
This is an annual event, so let’s all get out there next year and help support this worthy cause!

Five Cleaning & Organizing Tips

Sometimes organization can seem difficult.  You can look at a messy basement or a cluttered garage and feel overwhelmed by the job.  That feeling usually leads to closing the door and adding “clean the garage” to your “I can do that later list.”

The problem is that the longer you put off the job, the less likely it is that you’re going to do it.  Most of us have messy areas in our homes because we’ve become complacent with our current situation and we can’t think of a way to tackle what looks like a huge job.

Here are a few tips that will help you clean up and organize your home.

1)     Break the job down into specific smaller tasks

Cleaning out the garage or organizing your basement seems like too big of a job to handle but, if you break the job up into several smaller tasks, it suddenly becomes more doable.

For example, if you have a very messy basement, one of your smaller jobs could be to clean everything off of the floor.  Another small job could be to clean off one shelf every week.

When you break things up into manageable chunks, the job doesn’t seem so hard.

2)     Throw away your obvious garbage

In every messy room there are things that you obviously no longer need.  Old magazines, clothing you never wear and broken or damaged items are perfect examples of things you should be able to get rid of without much thought.  Get the easy items out of the way and your cleaning job will already look more possible.

3)     Sort the remaining items into piles

Make a “definitely keep” pile for those things you obviously want to hold onto.  Make a “maybe throw away” pile and put everything else there.  If you find any additional junk while sorting, put it directly into a “garbage” pile.

Then go through the “maybe throw away” pile and split it between “keep” and “garbage.”  If you haven’t used something in months and can’t honestly foresee using it in the future, put it in the “garbage” pile.  Be honest with yourself here and throw away anything you no longer need.

4)   Hire a junk removal company

For many jobs, it makes sense to hire a junk removal company to help you out.  You may want to rent a dumpster or trash bin to throw everything you no longer need into.  If you have a lot of junk, or you don’t have the time needed to throw everything away yourself, you may want a full service junk removal company.  They will do the hard work for you!  JuNKiT offers both services.

5)      Now organize everything

By this point you likely have a lot less stuff in your messy room.  It’s probably a lot easier to go through everything and organize it at this point.  Soon you’ll be left with a clean, functional room and you’ll have reclaimed a previously useless space in your house.  Enjoy the extra square footage!

Moving and Junk Removal Go Hand in Hand

Moving MonkeyMoving to a new home is a time of change.  You’ll have a new address, a new backyard and you’ll have to find a new route to work.  You may need to register your children in a new school.  There is definitely a lot of change going on.  In the spirit of change, moving is also a great time to get rid of a lot of the old clutter from your home.  There’s no sense in moving it with you and having it clutter up your new home, right?

Calling a junk removal company when you are moving just makes sense.  You will be able to move into your new home with less clutter and make a clean break from your old home.  It makes the process of moving in easier once you’ve gotten rid of your junk.

A good way to go about junk removal when you are moving is to move everything else out of the house.  Move as you normally would, just make a point to leave the items you no longer need behind.  Once everything else is gone, it’s time for junk removal.  You may want to place all of the unwanted items in one room, as this will make it easier for a junk removal company to dispose of them.

How do you decide what you no longer need?  Well, it starts off by looking at your new home.  If you have furniture that simply will not fit into your new space, it’s best to leave it behind.  Otherwise you will find yourself with another basement full of unwanted furniture and appliances at the new house.

Then you should start planning how you will position everything in your new home.  This can easily be done on paper or on a computer.  There will probably be items that you have chosen not to include in the layout of your new place.  These items can usually be thrown away.

The best part of using a junk removal service when you’re moving is that it’s easy.  Your old home will have nothing else in it so you don’t have to worry about accidentally throwing out the wrong things.  Plus, with less stuff in the old house, the junk removal company will be able to move around easier and finish their job faster.

You’ll then be left with an old, empty house and a new house that only has the items you actually need and want.  Once the moving truck leaves, pulling a dumpster up to your house is perhaps the best thing you could do.  Junk removal and moving just go together!

Garbage Bin and Dumpster RentalWhen you’re renovating your home, whether you’re tearing down walls or just replacing your carpet, a junk removal service can make the process much easier.  A great way to make the clean up process faster and more efficient is to rent a dumpster or a mini bin while you’re working.  There are several advantages to this.

First of all, you’ll be able to throw out all of your garbage as you create it.  You won’t need to move everything from the floor, to a truck to a dump.  Simply throw everything right in the dumpster and you’ll only have to move it once.  The junk removal company will come and pick up the dumpster when you’re done with it, so you’ll only have to move your construction waste once.

Second of all, this will make it easier for you to perform the actual renovations.  If you throw everything you no longer need out of the house and into a dumpster on your driveway, you’ll be freeing up space within the home.  You won’t have to worry about stepping around debris while you’re working.

That brings us to the third advantage: it’s safer.  When renovating it’s very easy to slip or trip on materials.  This becomes even more true when you’re tearing down walls, ripping out counters and cabinets or replacing flooring.  With garbage, trash and unwanted material laying everywhere, it’s easy to trip on something and hurt yourself.  Clear that stuff out of the way and place it in a dumpster before anyone gets hurt.

Junk It rents disposal bins in a variety of sizes.  For carpet removal or minor home renovation projects, you may only need to rent a smaller bin.  For major projects, there are larger bins that will suit your needs better.  All bins have low walls for easy loading and they won’t damage your driveway.

Having a dumpster on site when renovating definitely makes the process safer and the clean up faster and easier.

Clean the Junk from Your Garage

Clean The Junk From Your Garage

If you’re like most people, over the years your garage has become cluttered.  Boxes of old clothes, holiday decorations, tools and lawn care instruments likely fill most of the usable space.  You may not even be able to get the car in there anymore!  There are many advantages to cleaning out your garage.

First, a clean garage can be used for its main purpose: protecting your car.  If you garage is cluttered enough that you can’t pull your car into it, it’s time to call a junk removal company.  Keeping your car indoors, away from wind, water and snow damage, can prolong the life of your vehicle.  Some insurance companies even offer lower rates to those who store their cars indoors.

If you car does fit in the garage, that’s a good first step.  However, junk removal could help you in other ways.  Your car can actually be damaged by a disorganized garage.  Shovels, rakes and tools left in the garage can become hazards that can scratch your vehicle.  Large, heavy objects placed on high shelves can fall, damaging your car and possibly hurting someone!  Clear some space in your garage and rest safely.

If you don’t have a car, you may be using your garage for storage.  That idea made sense when you first moved into your home, but there’s a good chance that the storage room has now become a “cram as much junk as possible and shut the door quickly” room.  You’ll need to sort through the items in the garage and throw out whatever you don’t need.  Hiring a junk removal company can make this process easier and faster.

Once your garage is clean, you’ll be able to turn it into usable space.  Maybe you’ve always wanted a games room.  Maybe you could use a new workbench.  Some people even use their garages as home offices.  Once your garage is clean and organized, the possibilities are endless!

Junk removal is a great way to take advantage of the storage space in your home.  With a little organization and the help of a garbage bin or dumpster, you can transform what was once an embarrassing mess into an incredibly useful space that you will love to show off!

Clean Your Backyard & Remove Yard Waste

Spring Cleaning

Once the winter ends, you probably look at your backyard and wonder exactly what happened.  A long, snowy winter can cause havoc on a yard.  Not only will your grass be dead, but many of your bushes and flowers will be suffering as well.  You’ll likely also have tree branches and other debris littering the area.  The worst is that, when the snow melts, you’ll probably find all kinds of miscellaneous pieces of garbage that blew into your backyard and were buried by snow.  Newspapers, candy wrappers, chip bags and pop cans have a way of hiding under the snow and appearing months later to ruin the look of your backyard.

Depending on the level of mess, you may need to rent a dumpster or disposal bin to get rid of it all.  Sometimes you need to make a decision regarding the vegetation and plant life in your yard.  Unfortunately, your favourite rose bush or your prized perennials may have been damaged during the winter.  If your green thumb can’t revive them, it’s best to dig them out, dispose of them and start again.

The same goes for trees.  If the branches have been damaged during the winter, you may need to do some trimming.  Cutting off branches before they fall can save you a lot of time and potential destruction later.  A damaged tree branch falling during a particularly windy day can seriously injure someone or damage property.

Once you’ve trimmed what needs to be trimmed, dug up what needs to be dug up and cleaned what needed to be cleaned, you can throw everything you no longer need into the garbage bin and start spring with a clean, waste-free backyard.

Junk It rents garbage bins and dumpsters in various sizes, from mini-bins to large dumpsters.  All of our bins are easy to load and they won’t damage your driveway.  And, when you’re done, our experienced junk removal team will take the bin away!  Cleaning out your yard is an excellent way to start the spring.
